TWO HOLES IN ONE…..ON A BOWLING GREEN?

 

Our Annual Putting Challenge was the final event on our green this season and congratulations go to two times winner Jimmy Watson. However, special mention has to be made of runner up Willie Lyons who had an unprecedented two holes in one (one after the other) in reaching the final.

And so, our focus shifts to the social and community oriented activities within the Club. As I write I am looking forward to the Gents’ Presentation of Prizes where, once again, our meal will be prepared by our Ladies’ Section in return for that cooked and served by the Gents’ Section at the corresponding Ladies Prizegiving - a night described to me as ‘the best yet’! I am confident the Gents’ event will be every bit as enjoyable and I am grateful to all concerned for their hard work.

Such nights are peppered with reminiscences of past glories or unusual events. This season, for example, one of our male Committee members was having such an interesting conversation with his opponent that he turned around and threw his first bowl before he had thrown the jack! He still can’t explain what he was aiming at! Another Committee member managed to throw a ‘wrong bias’ four times in the one game! (Bowlers will know just how exceptional such events are!)

However competent they might be as bowlers – and they are - they undoubtedly form part of an excellent Committee who with a further small core of helpers get on with the day to day running of the Club. That core group would not want their names in the C&B News but people in the Club know who they are. Their value to the community can be seen in their charity work including that for the Children of Chernobyl, their continuing partnership with Balerno Folk Club and their involvement in the Balerno Music Festival. We would be in a poor state if those ‘willing hands’ became so disillusioned by the brickbats they sometimes face that they were no longer willing to serve. I only hope they will be joined by others with such commitment when our Annual General Meeting is held at the end of January.

And so the fun continues as we see the return of ‘Christian’ at our end November Cabaret Night and our Disco Ceilidh on Hogmanay. I wish I had as much energy as 60’s star Christian - what a non stop performer!
